ZULU SPEAR
Iconic world music dance band Zulu Spear (ZSB) performs Afro-beat and roots music, playing traditional South African mbaqanga rhythms and harmonies with modern and electric instruments.
Zulu Spear has shared the stage with many renowned artists including Ladysmith Black Mombazo, The Neville Brothers, Tom Tom Club, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis, and the Grateful Dead.
The newly reformed ZSB features several members of the BAMMY award-winning 1980's line-up including band leader Gideon Bendile (vocals, drum, dance), Ron Vanleeuwarde (guitar and vocals), and Paajoe Amissah (bass). Newer members include Moeketsi Kiibe (percussion) and Portia Mnyakama (dance and vocals).
Zulu Spear co-founder Gideon Bendile was born in Soweto South Africa in 1951. Gideon has performed and recorded with many musical icons including Hugh Masakela, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Sammy Davis Jr., and Siegfried and Roy . He also appeared on the big screen as a small boy in the highly acclaimed 1964 Stanley Baker movie "Zulu". He is also well known for his charming performance in The Lion King's "The Circle of Life" song with Elton John.
DAVID McGUIRE, Sea Stewards

DAVID McGUIRE, Founder of the Ocean Conservation non profit Sea Stewards and Director of the Shark Programs and Got Mercury Programs of Turtle island Restoration Project and winner of the Pacific Sun-Circle Bank "Heros of Marin Environmental Stewardship Award" will be interviewed by legendary environmental reporter JERRY KAY of Earth News.
A marine biologist and ocean advocate, David McGuire is the founder of the Ocean Health and Shark Conservation non profit Sea Stewards. As a Research Associate of the Department of Aquatic Biology at the California Academy of Sciences, David is conducting a shark research program that includes population studies, movements and fisheries impacts. As Captain, Dive Master and filmmaker, David has explored the world ocean on numerous sailing voyages producing media with an emphasis on ocean awareness. Educated in Marine Biology, he holds a masters degree in Environmental Health and has worked in education and public health at the University of California at Berkeley for over a decade. David is the writer, producer and underwater cinematographer of several award winning documentaries. David has recently produced a new documentary on the Sharks of San Francisco Bay and has recently worked as cameraman on feature films such as 180 South with Patagonia and A Beautiful Wave. Films in production includes a series on Sea Turtle Conservation, a film with partners Team Fish Finders using local fishermen to promote catch and release and a series on local sustainable seafood with fish guru Kenny Belov of Fish. He has also published numerous articles on the state of the ocean and sharks and writes a blog on sharks and ocean health.
Through Sea Stewards he has helped build a coalition leading to the passage of the California Shark Conservation Act (Fong, Huffman) in the State of California,the Shark Conservation Act, AB 376. As documentarian and diver, he has conducted expeditions with Academy researchers communicating the wonders of the natural world and ocean life and the need to protect them, including a 2011 two month expedition to the Philippines. Through his work, Sea Stewards is exploring and explaining our ocean world, influencing policies and practices from sustainable fishing to marine protection.
David is a published author and sits on several boards of non-profits including The San Francisco Green Film Festival and the Cordell Bank Marine Sanctuary Association. He has received numerous awards for his work including the Hero of Marin Environmental Stewardship Award in 2011.
Jerry Kay has worked as a teacher, broadcast journalist, speaker, talk show host, publisher, and lecturer focusing on ways to inform, involve and inspire the public. Jerry was the publisher of the Environmental News Network and chaired the Department of Educational Media at the California Academy of Sciences. He was Public Affairs Director at KFRC Radio in San Francisco, host of Science in Action on KCBS Radio, EarthNews on CBS nationally and Beyond Organic on Sirius Satellite Radio. Jerry hosts a variety of Earthnews Journal series including "Your Wetlands" for the San Francisco Estuary Partnership, "Aquarium of the Air" for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Switzer Network News for the Switzer Foundation. He is the recipient of the Harold Gilliam Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting from The Bay Institute.
Earth Day Marin will partner with League of Women Voters to present a nonpartisan Congressional Candidates Forum on the Environment.
